Love and Hip Hop: Miami star, Flo, faces public backlash after colorist remarks aimed at her fellow reality star and singer, Amara La Negra.
In a clip that went viral on social media both stars were seen in a heated argument where Amara accused Flo of selling skin-bleaching products stating, “You should really stop telling Black women to love themselves. You stop loving yourself - selling f****ing bleaching cream.”
Enraged, the ‘Sos’ singer then responded “You ugly as f**k. No wonder your baby daddy called you a Black a** b***h!” Flo shouted across the table.
Amara continued to question why she would show up to an event meant to uplift Black women while using her platform to promote colorism to which Flo accused her stating, “I’m light-skinned. This b***h is mad…That’s how Black b***hes hate on light-skinned girls!"
Shay Johnson and other cast members witnessed the argument and were visibly shocked by Flo’s comments. La Negra, who is an Afro-Latina, is no stranger to dealing with colorism and has continuously used her platform to speak up against it. She joined the cast of Love and Hip Hop: Miami in 2018 and her storyline centered around her image as an Afro-Latina. Her afro garnered significant attention from the media as she navigated the music industry with a natural aesthetic.
Following the release of the episode and the subsequent outrage, Flo issued a public apology on her Instagram and refuted colorist claims stating, “As a proud Black woman with deep ties to my Haitian heritage, I stand firmly against colorism. The product I sell is not a bleaching cream; it is designed to even skin tone and support healthy, glowing skin. I celebrate Black beauty in all its forms and am committed to empowering women of every shade.”
However, viewers who were not satisfied with the apology deemed it insincere and called for her removal from the show. The incident has also sparked conversations about colorism and its rampant presence in communities of color as viewers recall another incident with former Love and Hip Hop star, Erica Mena, who was fired for calling Jamaican dancehall artist, Spice, a blue monkey. Mena took to the Instagram comments accusing Love and Hip Hop of selective outrage and claiming that she was only fired to save face.
Amara La Negra has not responded to her cast member’s apology but has since posted photos celebrating her skin with the caption, “Melanated, Black and Beautiful! - Amara ‘LA NEGRA!’”
