Every year on January 20th, Martin Luther King has an entire day dedicated to celebrating his honor and the legacy he left behind before his passing. This year, Southern Tea Report had the honor and privilege of attending the 1 Roof MLK service event hosted by Emerging 100 Atlanta at city hall. This event featured several members of the community, the president of Emerging 100 Atlanta, the young men who make up this organization and even some fraternity and sorority members. The day started at 12pm and ended roughly around 4pm. The room was hype with music from a dj, several table with volunteer activities which included a packing essential supplies for the unsheltered, creating sandwiches, donating and packing non-perishable items, as well as different booths with access to affordable housing resources.Several sponsors contributed to the making of this event as well. The sponsors featured were Delta Airlines, Zillow, Comcast, Walmart, Airbnb, Target, and Gas South.
To keep the crowd on their toes, there were giveaways available. There were speakers present including the CEO and founder of Habitat for Humanity, Diriki Geuka the president of Emerging 100 Atlanta, and many others. Events like these are not only engaging for the community but also very helpful to spread awareness about the ongoing issues that face the Atlanta community. With the cold and crispy air nipping at people’s necks, the unhoused/unsheltered are affected the most, and events like these that create kits and packages for those who need it the most show how much not only the Atlanta community cares, but also Emerging 100 Atlanta.
Emerging Atlanta is a young professional auxiliary comprised of black men between the ages of 25-35 years old that strive to be role models to the next generation of black men by providing mentorship and tutoring. Throughout the year they host several different events that aim to help the community. These events include networking opportunities to young professionals, fundraisers, and community outreach. A lot was learned that day not just from the key speakers, but also from the young black men who make up Emerging 100 Atlanta.
In an interview that was conducted by one of Southern Tea Report Journalist, Vitaly Santana Herrera, questions were asked to two men who are a part of Emerging 100 Atlanta. These questions touched on who they are, Martin Luther King Day, and what goals they have for the year. The answers to these questions was remarkable and it taught us a lot. These men strive to leave a solid foundation so that the next generation of Emerging 100 Atlanta men, strive to do better than the year before. If Martin Luther King Jr. was still alive today, he would be immensely proud of these young men for the work they put in to support their community day in and day out. One key takeaway from this event is that with community, anything is possible. As long as you build a solid foundation of trust with those around you, anything can get done. There is always work to be done, but one brick at a time and eventually the house will be built.
