In Yemassee, South Carolina, 25 rhesus macaques that escaped from the Alpha Genesis Primate Research Facility have been safely captured, leaving 18 still at large. According to NBC News, the monkeys escaped on November 6 due to an unsecured door at the facility. While the recovered animals appear to be in good health, officials have urged the public to avoid the remaining monkeys to prevent alarming them.
Efforts to recover the animals have been intensive, involving traps, thermal imaging, and careful monitoring of the area surrounding the facility. Many of the remaining monkeys have stayed near the compound, occasionally crossing its fence. Authorities have also asked residents to avoid using drones, as one incident reportedly frightened the animals, complicating the recovery process.
Alpha Genesis CEO Greg Westergaard confirmed that the monkeys pose no risk to public health but emphasized the importance of professional handling to ensure their safety. Veterinary teams have conducted wellness checks on the captured monkeys, which are now receiving care at the facility.
The incident has sparked discussion on research facility security and animal welfare. While no foul play has been reported, the escape raised concerns about the facility’s protocols for preventing such occurrences. “It’s fortunate that the monkeys have remained close by,” an official noted, “but the situation highlights the need for better safeguards.”
Recovery efforts will continue until all monkeys are accounted for, with authorities relying on tips from residents and ongoing monitoring. According to NBC News, residents are encouraged to contact law enforcement if they spot any of the remaining animals but to maintain a safe distance.
